  • Redshift-evolutionary X-ray and UV luminosity relation of quasars from Gaussian copula

    摘要: We construct a three-dimensional and redshift-evolutionary X-ray and ultraviolet ($L_X-L_{UV}$) luminosity relation for quasars from the powerful statistic tool called copula, and find that the constructed $L_X-L_{UV}$ relation from copula is more viable than the standard one and the observations favor the redshift-evolutionary relation more than $3\sigma$. The Akaike and Bayes information criterions indicate that the quasar data support strongly the three-dimensional $L_X-L_{UV}$ relation. Our results show that the quasars can be regarded as a reliable indicator of the cosmic distance if the $L_X-L_{UV}$ relation from copula is used to calibrate quasar data.

  • The deformation of an erupting magnetic flux rope in a confined solar flare

    摘要: Magnetic flux ropes (MFRs), sets of coherently twisted magnetic field lines, are believed as core structures of various solar eruptions. Their evolution plays an important role to understand the physical mechanisms of solar eruptions, and can shed light on adverse space weather near the Earth. However, the erupting MFRs are occasionally prevented by strong overlying magnetic fields, and the MFR evolution during the descending phase in the confined cases is lack of attention. Here, we present the deformation of an erupting MFR accompanied by a confined double-peaked solar flare. The first peak corresponded to the MFR eruption in a standard flare model, and the second peak was closely associated with the flashings of an underlying sheared arcade (SA), the reversal slipping motion of the L-shaped flare ribbon, the falling of the MFR, and the shifting of top of filament threads. All results suggest that the confined MFR eruption involved in two-step magnetic reconnection presenting two distinct episodes of energy release in the flare impulsive phase, and the latter magnetic reconnection between the confined MFR and the underlying SA caused the deformation of MFR.

  • The improved Amati correlations from Gaussian copula

    摘要: In this paper, we obtain two improved Amati correlations of the Gamma-Ray burst (GRB) data via a powerful statistical tool called copula. After calibrating, with the low-redshift GRB data, the improved Amati correlations based on a fiducial $\Lambda$CDM model with $\Omega_\mathrm{m0}=0.3$ and $H_0=70~\mathrm{km~s^{-1}Mpc^{-1}}$, and extrapolating the results to the high-redshift GRB data, we obtain the Hubble diagram of GRB data points. Applying these GRB data to constrain the $\Lambda$CDM model, we find that the improved Amati correlation from copula can give a result well consistent with $\Omega_\mathrm{m0}=0.3$, while the standard Amati and extended Amati correlations do not. This results suggest that when the improved Amati correlation from copula is used in the low-redshift calibration method, the GRB data can be regarded as a viable cosmological explorer. However, the Bayesian information criterion indicates that the standard Amati correlation remains to be favored mildly since it has the least model parameters. Furthermore, once the simultaneous fitting method rather than the low-redshift calibration one is used, there is no apparent evidence that the improved Amati correlation is better than the standard one. Thus, more works need to be done in the future in order to compare different Amati correlations.

  • Tensor Gaussian Process with Contraction for Multi-Channel Imaging Analysis

    摘要: Multi-channel imaging data is a prevalent data format in scientific fields such as astronomy and biology. The structured information and the high dimensionality of these 3-D tensor data makes the analysis an intriguing but challenging topic for statisticians and practitioners. The low-rank scalar-on-tensor regression model, in particular, has received widespread attention and has been re-formulated as a tensor Gaussian Process (Tensor-GP) model with multi-linear kernel in Yu et al. (2018). In this paper, we extend the Tensor-GP model by integrating a dimensionality reduction technique, called tensor contraction, with a Tensor-GP for a scalar-on-tensor regression task with multi-channel imaging data. This is motivated by the solar flare forecasting problem with high dimensional multi-channel imaging data. We first estimate a latent, reduced-size tensor for each data tensor and then apply a multi-linear Tensor-GP on the latent tensor data for prediction. We introduce an anisotropic total-variation regularization when conducting the tensor contraction to obtain a sparse and smooth latent tensor. We then propose an alternating proximal gradient descent algorithm for estimation. We validate our approach via extensive simulation studies and applying it to the solar flare forecasting problem.

  • Are the Magnetic Fields Radial in the Solar Polar Region?

    摘要: We investigate the orientation of the photospheric magnetic fields in the solar polar region using observations from the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI). Inside small patches of significant polarization, the inferred magnetic field vectors at $1''$ scale appear to systematically deviate from the radial direction. Most tilt towards the pole; all are more inclined toward the plane of sky compared to the radial vector. These results, however, depend on the "filling factor" $f$ that characterizes the unresolved magnetic structures. The default, uninformative $f\equiv1$ for HMI will incur larger inclination and less radial fields than $f<1$. The observed trend may be a systematic bias inherent to the limited resolution.

  • Changes of Magnetic Energy and Helicity in Solar Active Regions from Major Flares

    摘要: Magnetic free energy powers solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs), and the buildup of magnetic helicity might play a role in the development of unstable structures that subsequently erupt. To better understand the roles of energy and helicity in large flares and eruptions, we have characterized the evolution of magnetic energy and helicity associated with 21 X-class flares from 2010 to 2017. Our sample includes both confined and eruptive events, with 6 and 15 in each category, respectively. Using HMI vector magnetic field observations from several hours before to several hours after each event, we employ (a) the Differential Affine Velocity Estimator for Vector Magnetograms (DAVE4VM) to determine the photospheric fluxes of energy and helicity, and (b) non-linear force-free field (NLFFF) extrapolations to estimate the coronal content of energy and helicity in source-region fields. Using Superposed Epoch analysis (SPE), we find, on average: (1) decreases in both magnetic energy and helicity, in both photospheric fluxes and coronal content, that persist for a few hours after eruptions, but no clear changes, notably in relative helicity, for confined events; (2) significant increases in the twist of photospheric fields in eruptive events, with twist uncertainties too large in confined events to constrain twist changes (and lower overall twist in confined events); and (3) on longer time scales (event time +12 hours), replenishment of free magnetic energy and helicity content to near pre-event levels for eruptive events. For eruptive events, magnetic helicity and free energy in coronal models clearly decrease after flares, with the amounts of decrease proportional to each region's pre-flare content.

  • Fast scalar quadratic maximum likelihood estimators for the CMB B-mode power spectrum

    摘要: Constructing a fast and efficient estimator for the B-mode power spectrum of cosmic microwave background (CMB) is of critical importance for CMB science. For a general CMB survey, the Quadratic Maximum Likelihood (QML) estimator for CMB polarization has been proved to be the optimal estimator with minimal uncertainties, but it is computationally very expensive. In this article, we propose two new QML methods for B-mode power spectrum estimation. We use the Smith-Zaldarriaga approach to prepare pure-B mode map, and E-mode recycling method to obtain a leakage free B-mode map. We then use the scalar QML estimator to analyze the scalar pure-B map (QML-SZ) or B-mode map (QML-TC). The QML-SZ and QML-TC estimators have similar error bars as the standard QML estimators but their computational cost is nearly one order of magnitude smaller. The basic idea is that one can construct the pure B-mode CMB map by using the E-B separation method proposed by Smith-Zaldarriaga (SZ) or the one considering the template cleaning (TC) technique, then apply QML estimator to these scalar fields. By simulating potential observations of space-based and ground-based detectors, we test the reliability of these estimators by comparing them with the corresponding results of the traditional QML estimator and the pure B-mode pseudo-Cl estimator.

  • Study on the filters of atmospheric contamination in ground based CMB observation

    摘要: The atmosphere is one of the most important contamination sources in the ground-based Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) observations. In this paper, we study three kinds of filters, which are polynomial filter, high-pass filter, and Wiener filter, to investigate their ability for removing atmospheric noise, as well as their impact on the data analysis process through the end-to-end simulations of CMB experiment. We track their performance by analyzing the response of different components of the data, including both signals and noise. In the time domain, the calculation shows that the high-pass filter has the smallest root mean square error and can achieve high filtering efficiency, followed by the Wiener filter and polynomial filter. We then perform map-making with the filtered time ordered data (TOD) to trace the effects from filters on the map domain, and the results show that the polynomial filter gives high noise residual at low frequency, which gives rise to serious leakage to small scales in map domain during the map-making process, while the high-pass filter and Wiener filter do not have such significant leakage. Then we estimate the angular power spectra of residual noise, as well as those of the input signal for comparing the filter effects in the power spectra domain. Finally, we estimate the standard deviation of the filter corrected power spectra to compare the effects from different filters, and the results show that, at low noise level, the three filters give almost comparable standard deviations on the medium and small scales, but at high noise level, the standard deviation of the polynomial filter is significantly larger. These studies can be used for the reduction of atmospheric noise in future ground-based CMB data processing.

  • Modifications of CMB spectrum by nonextensive statistical mechanics

    摘要: Cosmic microwave background radiation can supply us some most significant parts of the information on the universe. Some researchers believe that The gravitational system cannot be decribed by the standard statistical mechanics. In this article we apply Tsallis nonextensive statistical mechanics to investigate CMB spectrum and related cosmological processes. Based on recent observational data we find that the nonextensive statistical mechanics can modify the values of related physical quantites. Since the value of physical quantites have changed, some processes, such as recombination, can be affected. We have investigated the anisotropy of the CMB for two effects: the dipole anisotropy of CMB and the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect. We find that the dipole anisotropy of CMB cannot be modified by the nonextensive statistical mechanics. However, the standard result of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect should be modified by nonextensive statistical mechanics. In principle, future work can distinguish these effects.

  • Gamma ray burst constraints on cosmological models from the improved Amati correlation

    摘要: An improved Amati correlation was constructed in (ApJ 931 (2022) 50) by us recently. In this paper, we further study constraints on the $\Lambda$CDM and $w$CDM models from the gamma ray bursts (GRBs) standardized with the standard and improved Amati correlations, respectively. By using the Pantheon type Ia supernova sample to calibrate the latest A220 GRB data set, the GRB Hubble diagram is obtained model-independently. We find that at the high redshift region ($z>1.4$) the GRB distance modulus from the improved Amati correlation is larger apparently than that from the standard Amati one. The GRB data from the standard Amati correlation only give a lower bound limit on the present matter density parameter $\Omega_{\mathrm{m0}}$, while the GRBs from the improved Amati correlation constrain the $\Omega_{\mathrm{m0}}$ with the $68\%$ confidence level to be $0.308^{+0.066}_{-0.230}$ and $0.307^{+0.057}_{-0.290}$ in the $\Lambda$CDM and $w$CDM models, respectively, which are consistent very well with those given by other current popular observational data including BAO, CMB and so on. Once the $H(z)$ data are added in our analysis, the constraint on the Hubble constant $H_0$ can be achieved. We find that two different correlations provide slightly different $H_0$ results but the marginalized mean values seem to be close to that from the Planck 2018 CMB observations.

  • Forecasts of CMB lensing reconstruction of AliCPT-1 from the foreground cleaned polarization data

    摘要: Cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) observations are unavoidably contaminated by emission from various extra-galactic foregrounds, which must be removed to obtain reliable measurements of the cosmological signal. In this paper, we demonstrate CMB lensing reconstruction in AliCPT-1 after foreground removal, combine the two bands of AliCPT-1 (90 and 150~GHz) with Planck HFI bands (100, 143, 217 and 353~GHz) and with the WMAP-K band (23~GHz). In order to balance contamination by instrumental noise and foreground residual bias, we adopt the Needlet Internal Linear Combination (NILC) method to clean the E-map and the constrained Internal Linear Combination (cILC) method to clean the B-map. The latter utilizes additional constraints on average frequency scaling of the dust and synchrotron to remove foregrounds at the expense of somewhat noisier maps. Assuming 4 modules observing 1 season from simulation data, the resulting effective residual noise in E- and B-map are roughly $15~\mu{\rm K}\cdot{\rm arcmin}$ and $25~\mu{\rm K}\cdot{\rm arcmin}$, respectively. As a result, the CMB lensing reconstruction signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) from polarization data is about SNR$\,\approx\,$4.5. This lensing reconstruction capability is comparable to that of other stage-III small aperture millimeter CMB telescopes.

  • Large-Scale Spatial Cross-Calibration of Hinode/SOT-SP and SDO/HMI

    摘要: We investigate the cross-calibration of the Hinode/SOT-SP and SDO/HMI instrument meta-data, specifically the correspondence of the scaling and pointing information. Accurate calibration of these datasets gives the correspondence needed by inter-instrument studies and learning-based magnetogram systems, and is required for physically-meaningful photospheric magnetic field vectors. We approach the problem by robustly fitting geometric models on correspondences between images from each instrument's pipeline. This technique is common in computer vision, but several critical details are required when using scanning slit spectrograph data like Hinode/SOT-SP. We apply this technique to data spanning a decade of the Hinode mission. Our results suggest corrections to the published Level 2 Hinode/SOT-SP data. First, an analysis on approximately 2,700 scans suggests that the reported pixel size in Hinode/SOT-SP Level 2 data is incorrect by around 1%. Second, analysis of over 12,000 scans show that the pointing information is often incorrect by dozens of arcseconds with a strong bias. Regression of these corrections indicates that thermal effects have caused secular and cyclic drift in Hinode/SOT-SP pointing data over its mission. We offer two solutions. First, direct co-alignment with SDO/HMI data via our procedure can improve alignments for many Hinode/SOT-SP scans. Second, since the pointing errors are predictable, simple post-hoc corrections can substantially improve the pointing. We conclude by illustrating the impact of this updated calibration on derived physical data products needed for research and interpretation. Among other things, our results suggest that the pointing errors induce a hemispheric bias in estimates of radial current density.

  • Study on the filters of atmospheric contamination in ground based CMB observation

    摘要: The atmosphere is one of the most important contamination sources in the ground-based Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) observations. In this paper, we study three kinds of filters, which are polynomial filter, high-pass filter, and Wiener filter, to investigate their ability for removing atmospheric noise, as well as their impact on the data analysis process through the end-to-end simulations of CMB experiment. These studies can be used for the reduction of atmospheric noise in future ground-based CMB data processing.

  • Efficient ILC analysis on polarization maps after EB leakage correction

    摘要: The Internal Linear Combination (ILC) is widely used to extract the cosmic microwave background (CMB) signal from multi-frequency observation maps, especially for Satellite experiments with quasi-full sky coverage. We extend ILC method to CMB polarization map analysis with a small sky patch which is especially typical for ground-based experiments, by combing ILC with a template cleaning method which can give pure $B$ map free from $EB$ leakage caused by partial sky coverage. The feature of our methods is that we do the ILC analysis on pseudo-scalar $B$ maps, and the advantage is that it totally avoids the impact of $EB$ leakage on ILC, so that it can improve the efficiency of component separation dramatically. We demonstrate our methods with mock data of a future ground-based experiment with a deep survey on a clean patch in the northern sky, and the results show that the level of foreground residual can be well controlled, it biases the tensor to scalar ratio ($r$) at the order of $10^{-3}$ which is comparable to the statistical error by noise.

  • Performance forecasts for the primordial gravitational wave detection pipelines for AliCPT-1

    摘要: AliCPT is the first Chinese cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment which will make the most precise measurements of the CMB polarization in the northern hemisphere. The key science goal for AliCPT is the detection of primordial gravitational waves (PGWs). It is well known that an epoch of cosmic inflation, in the very early universe, can produce PGWs, which leave an imprint on the CMB in form of odd parity $B$-mode polarization. In this work, we study the performance of the component separation and parameter estimation pipelines in context of constraining the value of the tensor-to-scalar ratio. Based on the simulated data for one observation season, we compare five different pipelines with different working principles. Three pipelines perform component separation at map or spectra level before estimating $r$ from the cleaned spectra, while the other two pipelines performs a global fit for both foreground parameters and $r$. We also test different methods to account for the effects of time stream filtering systematics. This work shows that our pipelines provide consistent and robust constraints on the tensor-to-scalar ratio and a consistent sensitivity $\sigma(r) \sim 0.02$. This showcases the potential of precise $B$-mode polarization measurement with AliCPT-1. AliCPT will provide a powerful opportunity to detect PGWs, which is complementary with various ground-based CMB experiments in the southern hemisphere.
